What Place Does Machine Learning Have in Mortality Modelling? was one of those articles to which I could bring an actuarial perspective. I’ve only been working in this industry for a couple of years, but I’ve learned a lot about the importance of the mortality assumption when we’re preparing advice for our clients. And as someone whose work depends on the latest research into mortality trends, I think it’s a bit of a shame that we haven’t seen more adoption of machine learning approaches in the field of demography and mortality modelling. However, it does highlight the fact that as professionals, we often need to be able to communicate and collaborate with experts from other domains if we want to arrive at the best solutions for our clients—and ultimately, for wider society too.
